Job families are a way of categorizing and/or grouping positions with like duties and responsibilities, tasks involved in fulfilling those duties/responsibilities and educational requirements. Job families are “smart-numbered,” reflecting that the numbers have some meaning. The first digit of the job family indicates its broad “band,” consistent with the U.S. Department of Education categorization of jobs used in IPEDS reporting. The second number relates to the “sub-band” categorization of jobs by the U.S. Department of Labor for the Office of Federal Contract Compliance Program's (OFCCP) Affirmative Action reporting.
